Why you should be HIITing!

I hear from so many women and working parents that they just don't have the time for exercise. I spoke about time in my last post, you can read it here. Trust me, I get it. You're overworked, tired, and agitated. The last thing you want to do is workout before bed or wake up early to do it. But, what if I told you that all you need was 12-30 minutes a day? Could you spare 12 minutes for your health? Just don't go on Facebook in the morning and there's your 12 minutes!

Here's the thing about exercise: your body needs it. It will improve your energy, lighten your mood, improve your digestion and circulation, help you lose weight, release tension, make you happier, give you the motivation to eat healthy, and so much more. Don't get overwhelmed thinking you have to workout every single day for the rest of your life to lose the weight. Just take it one day at a time and I promise you will build momentum. That momentum, and those wonderful endorphins, will make you WANT to workout every day! You will miss it when you skip a day. We, like many others in the northeast, lost power for 7 days last week. Skipping those 12 minutes made me feel frazzled, stressed, unorganized, and out of shape. I craved the sweat and the endorphins. Going back to it was a little hard since I missed so many days but it felt so good. And now, I have built my momentum up again.

So here’s the deal with the 12 minute workout. It’s high intensity interval training. That means you work really hard for let’s say 50 seconds (think jumping rope or high knees) and then doing a lower impact exercise (shoulder presses) for 50 seconds. HIIT can also be in the form of running at 85% for 1 minute and then walking for 2. It all depends on your athletic level and abilities. But I assure you there is something for everyone. Here are some of the benefits of HIIT:

-         Increased metabolism and increased calorie burn for 24-36 hours after. Studies have proven that doing an interval workout burns more calories afterwards than running per say.

-         Gain muscle and burn calories together when you do the workout that I will recommend below. Like the example I gave above of lifting weights AND doing cardio.

-         Increased endurance. I went from only being able to do pushups on my knees to doing tons in a row! I can also workout for much longer without feeling fatigued since starting HIIT.

-         Efficient and Effective. You get an awesome workout that works every part of your body in less time than traditional ones (running at a steady pace for 30-45 minutes)

-         Fat blaster: HIITing gets tends to burn more fat than other exercises where your heart rate is steady

Ready to try it for yourself? I highly recommend BODYROCK.TV also known as DailyHIIT.com.
You can also find TONS of their FREE workout videos on YOUtube! Some involve light equipment (you can improvise) while others only use your bodyweight. There are videos that are an hour long or ones that are just 12 minutes. Right now I am doing their 30 day Catching Fire Challenge which you can find HERE absolutely for free!
