Kichari is a tri-doshic harmonizing and healing food. It can be used as a mono-diet since it is a complete protein and full of fiber. It has all the vitamins and nutrients you need. This is truly my new comfort food.

This recipe is from Lynn Roberts at Banyan Yoga & Ayurveda:


  • 1 cup basmati rice (I used brown rice, soaked. - Brown rice is much healthier than white rice which has all the nutrients taken out of it)
  • 1 cup green mung beans (I got these for $2.00 from the bulk bins at Whole Foods. Soak these overnight)
  • 1/2 sweet potato, cubed. (I LOVE sweet potatoes so I used a whole one)
  • 1 T ghee (or flaxseed oil)
  • 1 T Cumin
  • 1 T corainder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 inch grated ginger root
  • 4-6 cups water


  1. Combine the ghee and spices in large pot. Let cook for a few minutes.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients (4 cups water at first) and bring to a boil.
  3. Simmer for 30-45 minutes until beans and sweet potatoes are soft.
  4. Add more water as needed.
  5. Take comfort and enjoy!
